Closing Circle

A strategy for bringing a peaceful end to the school day and preparing students to transition from school to home or after-school activities.

End the Day in a Positive Way

Like Morning Meeting, closing circle gives students and teachers a sense of calm, safety, and community.

Increase students’ feelings of belonging, significance, and fun by gathering daily for five to ten minutes for a brief activity or two before dismissal. Boost students’ confidence by discussing the day’s accomplishments or setting goals for the next.

Closing circle activities include:

  • Playing a game
  • Singing a song together
  • Thinking about an accomplishment from their day
  • Setting a personal goal for the following day
  • Sending a friendly goodbye around the circle

Closing Circle Ideas

Give This Group a Hand

Students stand in a circle and chant:

We’re gonna give . . . this . . . group a hand.
We’re gonna give this group a hand. (Clap twice)
We’re gonna give . . . this . . . group a hand.
We’re gonna give this group a hand. (Clap twice)
So raise your hands up in the air, (Raise hands)
And pat your neighbor . . . right there. (Pat neighbors’ shoulders)

Circle of Hands

  1. Each person puts their right hand into the middle of the circle and makes a fist with their thumb extended to the left.
  2. Everyone connects hands: Each fist grasps the thumb of the person to the right.
  3. Holding this circle of hands, the class chants, “We are a class that helps each other!” three times, then raises their hands into the air, breaking them apart.
