Philadelphia Teacher Wins NEFC Scholarship

Noga Newberg, who teaches fourth graders at Independence Charter School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, attended a week-long Responsive Classroom II training this summer—for free. Noga was this year’s winner of the Ruth Sidney Charney Scholarship, established in 2006 to honor NEFC’s co-founder and the author of Teaching Children to Care.

In the essay she submitted with her application, Noga credits Responsive Classroom practices with “completely changing the way I speak to children, how I approach them, and what I expect of them.” In her advanced Responsive Classroom training, Noga says she hopes to continue finding her own voice as a teacher, while learning “how to listen more deeply to students and their families.”

The Charney scholarship provides full tuition for a teacher who is ready to attend advanced Responsive Classroom training but lacks the financial means to do so. Information on how to apply is available each spring at www.responsiveclassroom.org.
